The Standard: Swimming Preview

The 2011-2012 Brother Rice swimming team is one of the most highly anticipated teams in the area.  With the addition of numerous incoming freshmen, the team is expected to place top 3 at sectionals, as opposed to the fourth place finish in the 2010-2011 season.  The team’s ultimate goal is to send as many swimmers to the state championships as possible.

To qualify for the state championships in swimming, a swimmer must swim faster than the time cut for that event.  Last year, Mike Mulcrone swam a 49.81 in the 100 freestyle, just missing the state cut, which was 48.33.  He also swam a 1:48.55 in the 200 freestyle, missing the cut by three seconds, which was 1:45.63.  This year, the more experienced Mulcrone could go down state.  Ian Distledorf swam the 100 breastroke in 1:04.88, while the state cut was 1:01.28. Distledorf’s experience could also play a role in making the state cut this year.  Dave Jackson will swim the 500 freestyle and the 200 freestyle again this season. Kevin Mayer will swim the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.  Ian Distledorf will not only swim the 100 breaststroke as he did last year, but will also swim the 200 Individual Medley with Strahlman.

The Brother Rice swim team has a lot of talent, and with the stellar coaching combination of experienced Tony Chicowitz and Matt Latham, they could surprise the state.
