Brother Rice coach John McCarthy called timeout and motioned for senior outfielder Jake Ridgway to step out of the batter’s box for a little talk.
The Crusaders had two runners on base in the first inning, and Ridgway looked anxious at the plate.
“I was swinging over some curveballs,” Ridgway said. “Coach told me to wait back, that I’m probably going to get a good pitch to hit, and to drive it the other way.”
That’s precisely what Ridgway did Saturday, ripping a single to right field that scored a run. He later added a solo homer as Brother Rice earned a 15-11 Catholic Blue win over Mount Carmel.
With the win and St. Laurence’s loss to St. Rita, Brother Rice (24-7, 18-2) clinched its second straight Catholic Blue championship.
