Arthur Bibbs ’73 – Athlete: Basketball – Arthur played for Hall of Fame Coach Will Kellogg and held the basketball scoring record at Brother Rice until it was eclipsed by Hall of Fame member Jim Sexton. Arthur continued his playing career at Tulane University.
James Coleman, Jr. ’74 – Athlete: Football, Basketball Lights and Varsity/ Track and Field – As a three-sport athlete, James played football for Hall of Fame Coach Tom Mitchell and was the Most Valuable Player in football at both Brother Rice and the University of Illinois. At U of I, he led the Big Ten in all-purpose rushing and was named to the Big Ten All Ten.
Don Cranley ’64- Athlete: Football/Track & Field – Don was an All-Catholic League Track & Field selection with Catholic League records in the 100, 220, & 880 yard relays. In football, Don holds Br. Rice’s record for the highest average for number of yards per carry.
Ray Crowley ’71- Athlete: Baseball – Ray was an All-Catholic League selection for Hall of Fame Coach George Sedlacek. Ray was signed by the Montreal Expos in 1975 and played in the minor leagues for a number of years. Ray is also a member of the Br. Rice Baseball Hall of Fame.
Bob Cummings ’78- Athlete: Baseball – Bob was a sophomore on the Brother Rice 1976 IHSA state championship baseball team with Hall of Fame member Coach George Sedlacek. Bob was also the 1978 Lawless winner and named to the All-State team. He was a first round draft pick of the San Francisco Giants right out of high school and he played professional baseball for ten years with the Giants and the Seattle Mariners.
Tom Gorman ’85- Athlete: Football/Basketball – Tom was a four year member of the varsity basketball team under fellow Hall of Fame member Coach Will Kellogg and he was a senior football captain under Hall of Fame Coach Tom Mitchell where he was named an All-American punter. Tom received a football scholarship to the University of Notre Dame and was a defensive tackle on the 1988 Notre Dame National Championship Team.
Jimmy Harkness ’90 – Athlete: Soccer – At Brother Rice, Jim was an All-State, All-Midwest, and Illinois High School Senior Showcase Classic MVP. Jim received a scholarship to Eastern Illinois University and was named All-Conference in 1990, 1992, and 1993. Jim also played for the Chicago Power and Detroit Rockers professional teams. He currently is an assistant men’s soccer coach at St. Xavier University.
Brian Kelly ’90 – Athlete: Swimming/Water Polo – Brian played on two state titles in ’88-’89 and he led all scorers in the state playoffs in 1990. He was also selected MVP of Illinois High School Water Polo and was a member of National Junior Development Team at the Olympic Training Center. He attended Iona College and ended his water polo career as the school’s 6th all-time leading scorer. He is now the Head Men’s and Women’s Water Polo Coach at Iona College.
Patrick MacFarlane ’70 – Athlete: Basketball/ Baseball – Pat was an All-Conference and All-City team selection his senior year and he was a junior member of the team that won the 1969 Chicago Catholic League City Championship coached by fellow Hall of Famer Will Kellogg. Pat was also an All-Catholic League selection in baseball for Hall of Fame Coach George Sedlacek.
Jerry Mader ’61 – Athlete: Football/Basketball – Jerry was voted Most Valuable Athlete in the 1961 graduating class. In football, Jerry was an All-Catholic League, All-City, and All-Northern Illinois selection. In basketball, Jerry was an All-Catholic League and All-City selection. Jerry earned a scholarship to the University of Michigan where his team won the 1964 Big Ten Championship and the 1965 Rose Bowl Championship.
Br. John B. Moore – Posthumously – Coach: Tennis – Brother Moore joined the Brother Rice faculty in 1957, the school’s second year in existence. Brother Moore’s cumulative match record was 205 wins–89 losses, a 70% winning percentage. In 1976, he led his team to a 14-2 record, which was his best team record. The 1980 tennis team won the IHSA Sectional Championship. Brother Moore is a member of the Chicago Catholic League Hall of Fame and the Br. Rice Hall of Fame. He is the first Edmund Rice Christian Brother to be elected to the Circle of Champions.
Bob O’Connor ’64 – Athlete: Track & Field/Cross Country – Bob’s team won the first CCL Cross-Country Championship for Brother Rice in 1963. He also led Brother Rice to their first Catholic League Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 1964. He also holds several school records at Loyola University Chicago and holds the 1969 World Indoor Record in the two-mile relay at the Louisville Freedom Games.
Louis Pasierb ’65 – Athlete: Baseball – Lou was a three-time All-Catholic League Selection and his team was South Section Champs in 1964. He later signed with the California Angels and played in the minor leagues for three seasons. Lou is also an inaugural member of the Br. Rice Baseball Hall of Fame.
Ed Riska ’71 – Athlete: Basketball – A stellar basketball player at Br. Rice under Hall of Fame Coach Will Kellogg, Ed earned varsity letters at the University of Houston during the 1972-73, 1973-74 and 1974-75 seasons. He was a member of teams that compiled a 56-23 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Midwest Region First Round in 1973.
Jim Stalley ’69 – Athlete: Football – Jim led the 1967 and 1968 teams to two of the most successful seasons in Brother Rice football history. As a junior, Jim was the leading scorer in the Chicago Catholic League, and as a senior, Jim led an offense that still holds the school’s per game scoring record (29 points). Jim is one of only three running backs in Brother Rice history to be named MVP as a junior and senior. Jim played for Northern Illinois University and more recently coached 5th and 6th graders at Holy Redeemer for 18 years.
Mike Stritch ’93 – Athlete: Baseball – Mike was a member of the Chicago Catholic League championship team his senior season as well as the Lawless winner, All-Chicago Catholic League, and All-State. At Northwestern University, Mike was captain and MVP his senior year as well as All-Big Ten where is second in the Northwestern record book with 31 home runs.
Lamar Summers ’78 – Athlete: Football/Track & Field – In football, Lamar was an All-Catholic League and All-Area selection. In track and field, he was Catholic League, Sectional, and State Champion. At the IHSA state meet, he took 3rd in the 100, 2nd in the 200, and 1st in the 4×100 where his team finished 2nd place in state. Lamar continued at Iowa State where he lettered in football and track and field.
Mark Telander ’00 – Athlete: Basketball – Mark was a two-time All Catholic League selection and was named All-Area by the Southtown as well as All-State. His 2000 team tied a school record with 26 wins. He is the all-time free throw percentage leader and was an assistant coach on the first Brother Rice team that went downstate. At St. Xavier University, Mark was a two-time All American; his jersey was retired in 2009; and he was named to the SXU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.
Chris Ulrich ’87 – Athlete: Swimming – In swimming, Chris was a 4th place finalist in the 100 yard butterfly in 1986 and the IHSA State Champion in the 100 yard butterfly in 1987. Chris was also a butterfly champion at Lincoln College, Iowa State, and Southwest Missouri State. In water polo, Chris was a four-time member of state championship teams under Hall of Fame Coach Jim “Moose” Mulcrone.
John Walsh ’61 – Athlete: Football – John was co-captain and voted most valuable lineman in 1960 as well as selected to the Chicago Catholic League All-Star Team, Chicago Area All Star Team, and was an Illinois All-State Team Honorable Mention choice. John earned a scholarship to Michigan State University and earned two varsity letters under College Football Hall of Fame Coach Hugh “Duffy” Daugherty.
