On Saturday the Track & Field team competed in the Charger Invite at Stagg. The team placed 4th in the fifteen team field. The top performer on the day was Jim Baker who won both the long jump & triple jump setting personal bests in both. Josh Boulanger had a pair of second place finishes in the long jump and as part of the 4×200 relay team along with Rob Groyon, Leo Staudacher and Ty McCoy. The other second place finish came from the Distance Medley team of Dan Spellman, McCoy, Harrison Morg, and Tommy Gleeson. Justin Palmer was also a medalist taking third place in the 300 meter hurdles with a personal best. Another highlight on the day included a freshmen school record in the 4×400 by the team of Morg, Giacomo Iraci, Caleb Snoddy, and Ronan Dolan. This Thursday the team will travel to Oak Lawn to compete in the Spartan Classic.
On Sunday the Track & Field team closed out the indoor season at the Catholic League Championship at the University of Chicago. The varsity 4×800 team of Jack Mongan, Joe Sweeney, Steve Sloan, & Brian McElligott placed second. Other strong performances came from Jim Baker (third in the long jump, sixth in the triple jump) and Michael Butler-Kindle who scored in four events including a fourth place finish in the 60 high hurdles.
On Saturday the weight-men on the track team participated in the ‘King of the Ring’ tournament at Eisenhower. Four Crusaders threw personal bests including freshman Mike Davis, Sophomore Matteo Valencia, and juniors Pat Bardach (Bar-dash) and Alex Esparza. This Saturday the Varsity team will compete in the Argo Invite while the Frosh/Soph team travels to Evanston.
On Saturday, February 11, 2017, the Brother Rice track and field team competed at Homewood Flossmoor. Top performances on the day came from Jim Baker who took 3rd in the long jump; Zach Wareyko, who took 4th in the shot put; and Chase Hall, who took 1st in the 60LH.
Brian McElligott placed 4th in the 600m run, and the 4×200 and 4×800 teams both placed 2nd. Also, Harrison Morg set the freshman school record in the 600m run. The team will travel to Thornton this week to compete in the Wildcat Invite.
On Friday night, the Field & Track team competed in the IHSA Sectional at Morton High School. The Crusaders placed 6th as a team.
Qualifying for the state meet were Jelani Edmond, who was the Discus champion and Tahj Silas who placed 2nd in the 110 high hurdles, making this the 2nd straight year he has qualified in the event. Both athletes will compete at Eastern Illinois University this weekend.
Other athletes that set personal bests on Friday included Matt Tucknott who placed 3rd in the Shot Put, Steve Sloan who ran a 21 second PR in the 3200m, both Leo Staudacher & Derek Burns in the 100m, Brian McElligott & Nico Perez in the 400m, Justin Palmer in the 300 hurdles, Tre Gladney in the 200m, & Dominic Murphy who set the Freshman School Record in the Pole Vault.
On Saturday the Field & Track team competed in the Catholic League Championship at Loyola. The Crusaders placed 5th in the 15 team field.
Jordan Boyd defended his indoor title in the high jump and came away with the victory. Jelani Edmond had a strong day placing 2nd in the discus and 7th in the shot put. Bryan Boyd earned All-Catholic League status twice finishing 3rd in the high jump & 4th in the long jump. Matt Tucknott also placed in two events scoring in both the shot put (4th) and discus (7th). Zach Wareyko threw a big personal best of 43’5 to better his own freshman school record. Domnic Murphy also had a good day tying the freshman school record in the pole vault.
Other athletes earning All-Catholc League were Tahj Silas & AJ Burke in the 110HH, the 4×800 team of Mark Seavers, Xavier Perez, Steve Sloan, & Jack Mongan and the 4×400 team of Brian McElligott, Perez, Ty McCoy, & Leo Staudacher.
This Friday the team will compete in the IHSA Morton Sectional for a chance to qualify for the state meet.
On Friday the Track & Field team hosted the 10th annual Rice Relays. The team won its 4th straight championship. Events winners included Jordan & Bryan Boyd, Steve Robinson, and AJ Burke in the high jump, Tahj Silas, Burke, and Justin Palmer in the shuttle hurdles, and the 1600 medley team of Tre Gladney, Leo Staudacher, Ray Adams, and Jack Mongan. A big highlight of the night was the Big Man 4×100 team of Matt Tucknott, Jelani Edmond, Anthony Gomez, and Derek Burns capturing 1st place & more importantly the Barracos Deep Dish pizza. This Fridaythe team will compete in the Pete Struck Classic at Sandburg.
On Friday night, the Varsity Track and Field team competed in the Wildcat Classic at Thornton. The Crusaders placed 4th overall.
The sole event champion on the day was Jelani Edmond who captured 1st place in the discus. Second place efforts were turned in by Tahj Silas in the 110 High Hurdles, Mike Sundermeier in the 800 & Joe Sweeney in the 1600. Both Matt Tucknott (Shot Put) & Mark Seavers (1600) had good showings to grab third place.
This Saturday the team will compete in the Catholic League Championship at Loyola.
On Friday the Track team competed in the Pete Struck Classic at Sandburg. The Crusaders placed 9th out of 17 teams. The lone victory on the night came from senior Jelani Edmond in the Discus. His toss of 156’1 currently ranks him 18th in class 3A.
The 4×1 and 4×2 team of Cody Bolden, Justin Palmer, Tre Gladney, and Ty McCoy set freshmen school records in both events destroying the old mark.
This Thursday the F/S team will compete for the Catholic League Championship at Concordia University and try to win their 3rd title in 4 years. The Varsity team will compete Saturday at Thornton.
The 10th Annual Rice Relays will be held on Friday, April 22 in the Gary Little Stadium at Brother Rice High School. Field events begin at 4:45 P.M. and track events begin at 6:00 P.M.
