Alumni Spotlight: Don Webster ’66 Enjoyed Hall of Fame Athletic Career at Brother Rice

Don Webster is grateful that he had some height when he first attended Brother Rice High School as a freshman.

That proved to be the criteria necessary to start what would become a remarkable football career for the 1966 graduate.

“I went out for football freshman year and there were only 10 uniforms left, so the guys that didn’t already have one were told to stand in line from tallest to shortest,” Webster said. “I happened to be one of the tallest guys, so they gave me a uniform. That’s the only reason I made the varsity that season.”

While his first season was relatively uneventful, he would go on to become the first all-state player in program history.

Webster was a two-way standout for the Crusaders, demonstrating his versatility by being a running back, split end, linebacker and defensive back during his high school career.

Circle of Champions Class of 2012 Announced

The Circle of Champions Class of 2012 was welcomed to the Brother Rice Homecoming game last week.  These outstanding past Crusader athletes were invited to a special reception area in the north end zone before the varsity game against St. Rita.  Under the tent, they enjoyed appetizers and refreshments as they watched the varsity game and caught up with old friends.

During the halftime break, the Circle of Champions Class of 2012 was introduced to the crowd and brought out to the fifty-yard-line by various Crusader sport representatives.  After the game, all were invited to a homecoming reception in the North Gym.

The “Class of 2012” will be inducted into the Brother Rice Circle of Champions on Saturday, April 14.  Please watch the Brother Rice Athletic webpage for more information about this event.

Lamar Summers ’78: A Man Who Defines Brother Rice

Lamar Summers truly defines a man of our time when you talk about significant figures from Brother Rice. Lamar came to Brother Rice not knowing a soul and had barely played organized sports before. With the guidance of Coach Tom Mitchell, Lamar learned how to play football and quickly became impressive on the field. It wasn’t until his junior year that he learned he was gifted at track and quickly shined on the track squad.

Lamar lead the football team his junior and senior year to back to back Catholic League championship game appearances. Also during his senior year he led the track team to a state championship medal in the 4×100 relay. And if you walk through the pool corridor and take a glance at the track records, you see Lamar’s name all over the board.

Not only did he achieve success on the field and track, but also succeeded in the classroom. He was such a great student athlete that he received a football scholarship to Iowa State University. If it was not for the great staff and faculty that Brother Rice provided, and the help of Coach Mitchell and Brother Shole, Lamar wouldn’t have gotten where he did. For Lamar all the success on and off the field is great. But, for him the most important thing was being an African American athlete and representing Rice the right way. And he truly takes pride in being a successful African American student athlete from Brother Rice. I recently caught up with Lamar to talk about his induction into the Circle of Champions.
How does it feel to be inducted into the Circle of Champions?

“I never would’ve imagined it; I always played sports for the fun of it, not the awards. When I got the call I was really shocked, but at the same time I knew it was a great honor. I’m very humbled to be inducted into the second class of Circle of Champions especially when you look at all the talent over the years from the school. It really means a lot to me that Brother Rice thinks that highly of me.”

What did you think about Coach Tom Mitchell being inducted into the inaugural class?

“It meant a lot to me for Coach Mitchell to be inducted because he did so much for me on and off the field. I looked up to him so much back then, and I still do. He wasn’t afraid to criticize me or get on me when I did something wrong, but he also knew when to give me advice. He actually got me my first job in high school to at the park district. Coach Mitchell really did a lot for me and I’m glad he’s in the circle of champions.”

What’s your favorite memory high school football?

“The one thing that sticks out to me besides all the stats and accolades is the guys. Teammates like Tom Broderick and Tony Michalek were like brothers to me back then and still are. We all started out together freshman year under Coach Duffy. And we started are four year challenge together and finished together. It seemed like no matter what happened when it was came time we always came together as one team and that’s something I truly treasure.”

How did it feel to have the best football game of your career against St. Laurence in the catholic league championship?

“Playing against Laurence was always a big game and it was the second straight year we battled them for the championship. At the end of the day I was happy with my stats but I would’ve been happier if we had won the game. It was my best game ever of playing football with 11 catches for 173 yards and 2 TD’s, and I’ll always remember that game.”
What is your favorite memory of high school track?

“Definitely winning Catholic League two years in a row. As a team we came together and achieved success. I really thank Br. Shole for helping me become a better track athlete every practice and meet.”

How did it feel winning the 4×100 track state championship your senior year and your last race ever?

“Anytime you win state is special, but winning my senior year was really bittersweet. It meant a lot to represent Brother Rice by winning, especially being an African American. I didn’t have my best day that day, but my teammates rallied and we won the event.”

What’s one thing your thankful for towards Brother Rice?

“This is easy to answer, the guys who were there. We were competitive on the field, but friends off it. I can never replace the guys and faculty that were there at the time. Brother Rice is truly a brotherhood and its camaraderie together.”

How did Brother Rice prepare you for Iowa State and life after school?

“The academics really helped me at college because Rice was tops at academics. The faculty helped me be prepared for college and the real world after. It’s because of Brother Rice I’ve had the success at my job.”

The Standard: Brother Rice Holds Ceremony for Inaugural Class of the Circle of Champions

For the first time in Brother Rice High School history, an athletic hall of fame has been created named the Circle of Champions.  In the summer, Athletic Director Phil Cahill and the athletic staff came up with the idea in order to honor 55 rich years of athletic history on 99th and Pulaski.

The inaugural class was composed of 23 former players and coaches that represent all professional sports.  Their athletic careers can be characterized by unprecedented honor and amazing achievements.  The induction for the inaugural class was long overdue and all inductees were very humbled as a result.

Close to 700 people attended the dinner and induction on April 16.  Faculty member and coach Mr. Bill Gleeson said, “This was one of the best events that has ever taken place at Rice and it was a great way to honor these men.”  A special thank you during the beginning of the evening was given to Ms. Sue Stanley who put forth a tremendous amount of effort in planning the event.  The president of Brother Rice, Dr. Kevin Burns added, “This will be an annual event because of the tremendous success and feedback I have gotten from numerous people.”

The members of the inaugural class include: Jim Aducci ‘77, Tom Coyle ‘69, Dave Diehl ‘98, Mark Donahue ’74, Phil Hicks ’71, Rico Hill ’95, Bobby Jones ’69, Coach Will Kellogg, Pete Mackanin ’69, John Meyer ’60, Coach Tom Mitchell, Coach Jim “Moose” Mulcrone, Patrick J. Murphy ’91, Dan O’Connell ’82, Eddie Olczyk ’84, Coach Pat Richardson, Billy Savarino ’94, Coach George Sedlacek, Jim Sexton ’94,  Jim Solus ’77, Lance Ten Broeck ’74, John Tracy ’64, and Don Webster ’66.
