Brother Rice Bowling Tryouts

Brother Rice Bowling TryoutsTryouts for the 2014-15 bowling team will be held for three days at Arena Bowl at 3:15 P.M. on Monday through Wednesday, October 27-29.  Arena Bowl is located at 4300 West 103rd Street. Bowlers are asked to be on time and must be picked up by 5:15 P.M. at the bowling alley all three days.

Players must bring their own equipment.  If players don’t have shoes, they can rent them.  If they don’t have a ball, they can use a house ball. All bowling will be paid for by Brother Rice.

All participants must have an up-to-date physical on file with the school or handed in to one of the coaches before tryouts Monday.

The Standard: Evans on a Roll

Terrance Evans Bowling 2013Terrance Evans is on a roll.   A senior at Brother Rice high school and a bowler at Rice for four years, Evans was the captain of the varsity team this season and has “had a role on varsity” since he was a freshman.  Today, Evans is ready to continue his bowling career in college, and armed with a scholarship, his father’s support and coaching, and his own powerful determination, he can do just that.

In addition to bowling, Evans also participated on both the track and field team and the football team at school.  With his strength and size, it’s no wonder Evans was successful with shot put and discus.  Throwing is something that Evans enjoys, and it also helped him with improving his bowling footwork.  Evans has always been a leader on the bowling team, and he attributes much of his knowledge to his dad, who introduced him to bowling when he was a kid.  Evans, who has no siblings, received the attention needed to make a fine bowler and student.  After learning from his father, Evans continued to benefit and grow from the knowledge of coaches, teammates, and peers.  Evans says, “The bowling team has helped me to become a good leader, understand the value of teamwork, and to be a good instructor.”

Evans was exactly that during his senior year on the team, mentoring the younger bowlers, working with each teammate to win matches, and leading the team through challenges.  I speak from personal experience; as a sophomore and two-year bowler for Brother Rice, I can say that bowling alongside Evans was a privilege for me.  Approaching the lane slowly and deliberately, he swings his arm back behind him and, as his size 14 shoe meets the wood, he launches one of his five bowling balls down the lane.  A lot can be learned from Evans if you observe the way he carries himself on the lanes.  I have seen him roll near-perfect shots that seem to hit right on target and then leave an ugly split.  Evans was always able to remain strong and positive, even in the worst of slumps, a quality that is infinitely valuable in any leader, especially a bowler.  After having a day that most bowlers would try to forget, Evans always kept his head up and looked for ways to improve on his weaknesses.  Bowling coach Tim Daniher comments, “It was a pleasure to watch how he matured throughout his four years on the bowling team.”  To young bowlers, Evans stresses the importance of technique.  “Their ability to repeat shots over and over again…this is the biggest thing college coaches look for in high school bowlers.” he says.

This fall, Evans plans to attend Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Evans has earned a scholarship to Cardinal Stritch because of his hard work and tenacity displayed on the bowling team.  Evans says he is looking forward to a fresh start and is excited to bowl on the next level in college.  When he’s not busy earning a name for himself on the bowling lanes, Evans plans to study in the field of computer science.  Evans says he is very interested in learning about mobile devices such as cell phones, tablets, and laptops, which is why he will be studying computer science.  Evans always had good grades throughout high school, and he hopes to continue in this way after graduation.  Mr. Daniher, who was also Evans’ English teacher, says he was always a fine, hardworking student and was very respectful to his teachers and his classmates.

Evans may be moving on after Brother Rice, but he will always remember the things he has learned and done there.  Hopefully he can continue to work hard and find success on the lanes as well as in the classrooms.

SouthtownStar: Brother Rice’s Evans Tackling the Lanes

Terrance Evans Bowling 2013Every year in mid-to-late November, Brother Rice’s Terrance Evans goes through a transition from the aggression and physicality of football to bowling — a sport that requires relaxation, focus and routine as opposed to sheer grit.

It’s quite the shift in mentality.

“It usually takes me a week or two to smooth back into bowling and get my mind-set right,” Evans said.

Watch Evans on the lanes over the first week or so of the bowling season and you may see him fire a ball the way he fires himself into an opponent as a right tackle and nose guard on the Crusaders’ football squad.
