Brother Rice’s Mike Massey was looking for an off-speed pitch Saturday during his first inning at-bat against Mount Carmel.
Instead, on a 2-2 count, the senior second baseman got a fastball. It didn’t faze Massey, an Illinois recruit.
The No. 3 batter in a stacked Crusaders order, he hit a two-run homer over the right-field fence. It was the start of three homers by Brother Rice in a 7-1 Catholic League Blue win over Mount Carmel.
“I saw their pitcher throw three straight off-speed pitches to (Ryan) King,” Massey said of the sequence to the Crusaders’ leadoff hitter. “And with it being a lefty (pitcher)-lefty (hitter) matchup, I thought it was going to be an off-speed pitch.
It also helped Brother Rice (29-2, 20-0) establish a program record with their 28th straight win. A win Monday over the Caravan (22-7, 15-5) would complete a stunning sweep by the Crusaders of the Catholic League Blue.
