Boys Volleyball: Brother Rice outlasts Providence

When talking about Mitch Weiler, Brother Rice coach Br. Paul Ickes delivered the ultimate compliment.

“You would never know he is a sophomore,” Ickes said. “He’s very smooth and he doesn’t get rattled. It’s great having him on court.”

Weiler finished with 12 kills for host Brother Rice in a 25-21, 21-25, 25-23 thriller over Providence in a meeting of last season’s Catholic League Blue co-champions.

An outside hitter, Weiler is coming off a stress fracture in his back that caused him to miss several months in the offseason. He’s showing no lingering effects from the injury.

Brother Rice vs. Marist Boys Volleyball Match Changes for Friday, May 20th at Brother Rice

For a number of reasons, the outdoor boys’ volleyball matches between Brother Rice and Marist High Schools have been moved indoors. The matches will still be played at Brother Rice on Friday, May 20th but the fund-raising cause will be different, as well as the schedule.

“Unfortunately, the group that we rented the outdoor flooring from has since sold the court to another group outside of our region, and there is not another court to replace it at this point.  Also, while making the move indoors, our schools also decided to suspend our commitment for one year to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and to focus more locally in our fundraiser this year,” commented Brother Paul Ickes, CFC, Head Indoor and Sand Volleyball Coach at Brother Rice.

Brother Ickes continued, “During this school year, both schools have experienced the loss of a senior class member, Jarrett Rowe of Brother Rice last September and Paul Simmons of Marist last week.  Both Brother Rice and Marist are dedicating next Friday’s matches to the memory of Jarrett and Paul, and all gate proceeds will be divided equally between the schools to benefit their scholarship funds for students in need. “

Next Friday’s games will feature the Freshman A and JV matches at 5:00 PM, the the Freshman B and Varsity matches at 6:00 PM.  The players will be wearing special jerseys for the match as well which include a memory message on the sleeve.

Admission to all four matches is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for senior citizens and students, and free for children 5 and under.  A large crowd is expected for the matches, so please arrive early.

Brother Ickes concluded, “Please join us to support one another in this special event for two worthy causes, to see some great volleyball, and most importantly to remember the lives of two great Brother Rice and Marist young men, Jarrett and Paul.”

Coverage will be provided for the varsity match by Sports Town Chicago.

For further information on these matches, contact Brother Paul Ickes, CFC at Brother Rice at 773-428-1957.
