Sailing Team Competes in Culver, Indiana

Sailing Culver Regatta 2013The Brother Rice/Mother McAuley Sailing Team competed in the Banks Blackwell Invitational Regatta hosted by Culver Military Academy on their scenic campus in Culver, Indiana.

The A Fleet consisted of senior skipper Zach Pakula and was crewed by junior Ian Reed and freshman Chris Murphy. The B Fleet consisted of freshman skipper Emily Gildea and was crewed by sophomore Blake Weglarz. This was McAuley freshman Emily Gildea’s first race as a skipper.

Both fleets competed against twenty-one other high school teams from throughout the Midwest.  Saturday proved to be an optimal day for sailing with winds between 15-20 knots; A Fleet members Zach Pakula and Ian Reed even grabbed a first place in one of the races.  Sunday presented much lighter winds yet challenging conditions for the competitors.

The regatta was ultimately won by Spring Lake High School.  Diana Sanchez, currently on injured reserve, and Anthony Curbis were unable to compete in this regatta.

The next scheduled competition will be October 5 and 6 and hosted by Lake Forest.
