Beautiful summer-like conditions greeted the Brother Rice Sailing Team on Saturday, September 8, for the Kick-Off Classic near Wilmette Harbor. Southwest winds from 12- 20 knots prevailed throughout the day. The southwest winds on Saturday slightly favored the middle right side of the course, as Brother Rice competed against teams such as Lake Forest, Culver Academies, and Loyola. Twenty-three Midwestern high school teams participated.
Rough Lake Michigan weather prevailed on Sunday. A front bringing in moderate northeast winds and 5 foot waves controlled the day of racing. This was a day to focus on boat handling and managing the big winds and waves. Brother Rice did well, due to focusing on the fundamentals of boat handling. High school team rankings can be viewed at MISSA, the Midwest Interscholastic Sailing Association site, throughout the season. Next up for the team is travelling to Culver Academies for a regatta on September 21 and 22. The 2013 Brother Rice/Mother McAuley team consists of Emily Gildea, Chris Murphy, team captain Zach Pakula, Ian Reed, and Blake Weglarz.
