Brother Rice Remembers the Life of John Tracy ‘64

John Tracy 64 CoverIt is with deep sadness that Brother Rice High School announces the passing of John B. Tracy, Jr. ’64. John is the brother of James M. Tracy ’70, Timothy P. Tracy ’72 and the late Thomas D. Tracy ’65.

John attended Brother Rice High School, graduating in 1964. While at Brother Rice, he competed in every varsity basketball game during his four years, earning All-Catholic League as a junior and senior and also All-State honors. He is the school’s fifth leading scorer. He attended the University of Notre Dame on an athletic scholarship, graduating in 1968. At Notre Dame, he earned the basketball varsity letter, and during his senior year, he also served as a student assistant coach. In 1968, John came to Marquette Catholic High School, Michigan City, to serve as head basketball coach, where his teams won four conference titles and four tournament titles. He was also awarded “Area Coach of the Year” on four separate occasions. John then returned home to Chicago to serve as assistant basketball coach under former Notre Dame coach Gene Sullivan at Loyola University from 1988-1989. In 1991, he became the Dean of Students and head basketball coach at Chicago’s St. Ignatius College Prep. Under his direction, the Wolfpack basketball program won one North Sectional title, one York Tournament title, and, in 2000, captured SICP’s first Catholic League title in 42 years. One highlight of John’s coaching career was the school’s first and only Illinois Sweet Sixteen appearance. From 2009-2011, John was a television and radio color analyst for the Loyola University Ramblers. In 2011, he was inducted into the inaugural class of Brother Rice’s Circle of Champions, and in 2012, John was inducted into the Chicago Catholic League’s Hall of Fame.
