Brother Rice and Mother McAuley high schools offer a variety of athletic opportunities for students to participate in; but there’s one that not many people know about, and the schools are looking to change that fact.
Sailing brings students from both schools together in the fall and spring, and organizers are looking to get more sailors on their co-ed squad.
The co-op team was formed in 2009, and Brother Rice Marketing Director Brian Barkowski took over as the moderator last year. He said there are a myriad of reasons why he got involved.
“I enjoy it because it’s a different opportunity for the kids,” said Barkowski. “Not many schools offer sailing, and I like the fact that it’s co-ed with McAuley. I also enjoy the fact that the kids are participating in something downtown. The kids are taking the train and learning how to navigate the city. It gets them involved and gets them exposed to something different while they are here.
