Legendary Brother Rice wrestling Coach Bill Weick has a resume that everyone in the sport can envy.
He added another accomplishment to the list when the Crusaders rallied to capture the program’s first regional championship on Feb. 6.
Brother Rice trailed St. Rita 161 to 154.5 entering the finals, but it won a pair of head-to-head championship matches against the Mustangs and had five individual crowns to beat their Catholic League rival 195.5 to 179 in a Class 3A regional at Hubbard High School on Feb. 6.
“This is right up there with all the best of them. Maybe I’ll quit on this one,” said Weick with a smile. “These kids have helped each other so much. They have worked so hard and have progressed throughout the year. This is the greatest.”
Weick also credited his assistant coaches, including Jan Murzyn, who has been with Weick since he started coaching at Br. Rice.
Murzyn was clearly emotional when the Crusaders seniors collected the regional plaque.
